What to pack for a summer trip

As soon as summer arrives most of us already have trips on the books or are ready to start planning them. Then the week before the trip arrives and it's like we've never packed before...what do we bring? what outfits do we wear? how many outfits per day? how do we fit our whole closet in 1 suitcase?

Here's our Prept point of view on what to consider packing for summer trips in this post, and as always, if you want personalized advice from our team you can book a style session anytime, anywhere with our team here (for a limited time a session is just $50, usually $75!) or in the app.

First things first, when packing your style + beauty essentials for a summer trip, it's important to consider the climate of your destination, the activities you'll be participating in, and of course what makes you feel your best.

When it comes to clothes

The capsule wardrobe pieces are always a good base when considering what you need for your trips, and summer wardrobe in general!

  1. Lightweight tops: Pack breathable t-shirts, tank tops, or blouses that can be easily layered and worn with different bottoms

  2. Bottoms: Bring a variety of shorts, skirts, and lightweight pants and/or jeans for different occasions

  3. Dresses: Pack a few dresses that can be dressed up or down for various events

  4. Swimwear: Pack your swimsuits, cover-ups, carryall bag for the pool/beach, and don't for get a towel if you think you'll need it

  5. Footwear: Bring comfortable walking shoes or sneakers, casual sandals, and a dressier sandal

  6. Accessories: Pack sunglasses, a sun hat, a lightweight scarf, and some versatile jewelry pieces to accessorize your outfits

  7. Layers: Include a light sweater, denim jacket, cardigan for cooler evenings or air-conditioned places

  8. Activewear and travel outfit(s): Consider joggers, leggings, t-shirt, a jumpsuit, baseball cap, sweatshirt, or whatever you can be comfortable during travels and active elements of your trip like hikes and other adventures

  9. Statement pieces: This is where you incorporate those new rental pieces or purchases for the special occasions during your trip, a night on the town, events during your trip, photo worthy moments that you want that special factor incorporated. These could be a special statement top, dress, bottom, or accessory. For example the bold print/color romper that isn't your everyday and part of your capsule wardrobe.

Other items and considerations: Tide white pen or Shout wipes for your whites, the right undergarments for the pieces you packed, hat carrier, suitcase, weekend bag. If you have delicate items like silk tops consider leaving these at home to keep in tact or pack with care as these can get easily nicked in transit. Think about bags that can be easily packed without ruining form and quality. A good weekender bag like the cult-favorite BEIS option is ideal for trips.

When it comes to makeup

  1. Sunscreen: Ensure you have a high SPF sunscreen for face and body to protect your skin from the sun.

  2. Lightweight foundation or tinted moisturizer: Opt for a lighter coverage to let your skin breathe in the heat.

  3. Waterproof mascara: Choose a long lasting or waterproof formula to withstand humidity and water activities.

  4. Cream blush or bronzer: Cream products tend to last longer in the heat and give a more natural finish.

  5. Lip balm with SPF: Keep your lips moisturized and protected from the sun.

  6. Setting spray: Use a setting spray to help your makeup stay in place in hot weather.

  7. Minimal eye makeup: Consider packing a neutral eyeshadow palette and a long lasting or waterproof eyeliner for a simple and fresh look.

  8. Makeup remover wipes: These are convenient for removing makeup and refreshing your face on the go.

  9. Haircare: Products to keep hair hydrated especially if planning for the pool and ocean. Dry shampoo is always a good idea

  10. Skincare: Last but certainly not least keep your skincare regimen going even while on vacation with travel sized products and products that allow you to hydrate and freshen up your skin to still look rested even when tired from travels like face masks, under eye patches, facial sprays
